The turning of the seasons has always held deep spiritual significance, and Mabon, the Autumnal Equinox, is one of the most beautiful and profound points in the Wheel of the Year. Often called the "Pagan Thanksgiving," Mabon invites us to pause, reflect, and honor the balance between light and dark as we prepare for the coming winter months.
Origins of Mabon
The name Mabon comes from Mabon ap Modron, a figure from Welsh mythology associated with youth, fertility, and the cycle of life. While the festival itself draws on ancient harvest traditions across Celtic, Norse, and other pagan cultures, the term “Mabon” was popularized in the 1970s by Wiccan author Aidan Kelly.
Historically, agrarian societies celebrated this time as the second harvest, gathering fruits, grains, and vegetables before the cold set in. Feasts, offerings, and rituals of gratitude were central, ensuring that the community entered the dark half of the year with full pantries and full hearts.
The Meaning of the Equinox
On the Autumnal Equinox, day and night are in perfect balance. From this moment onward, the nights grow longer and the days shorter, signaling the approach of Samhain and winter’s embrace.
Spiritually, Mabon is a time of balance, gratitude, and release:
Balance – honoring both light and dark within and around us
Gratitude – giving thanks for the harvest (literal or metaphorical) of the year
Release – letting go of what no longer serves, making space for rest and renewal
It’s a reminder that just as the Earth cycles through abundance and dormancy, so do we.
Ways to Celebrate Mabon
You don’t need elaborate rituals to honor this sacred day, celebrations can be as simple or ceremonial as you feel called to.
Here are some meaningful ways to connect:
Feast with Seasonal Foods: Apples, squash, corn, pumpkins, root vegetables, nuts, bread, and cider are all traditional. Cook a meal with intention and gratitude.
Decorate Your Altar: Use colors of autumn, deep reds, golds, browns, and oranges. Add leaves, acorns, pinecones, apples, or a cornucopia as symbols of abundance.
Practice Gratitude: Write down what you are thankful for from this year’s “harvest”, whether achievements, relationships, or lessons learned.
Offerings to Nature: Leave an apple slice, bread, or wine outdoors as thanks to the Earth, spirits, or deities.
Balance Rituals: Meditate on balance, between work and rest, giving and receiving, holding on and letting go.
Crafting & Creativity: Make autumn wreaths, herbal sachets, or preserves from seasonal fruits.
Magickal Properties of Mabon
Mabon is a powerful time for magick that honors balance, abundance, and release.
Work with this energy to align yourself with the season:
Crystals: Amber, citrine, tiger’s eye, carnelian, smoky quartz.
Herbs & Plants: Sage, rosemary, apple, pomegranate, acorns, marigold, ivy.
Colors: Gold, red, orange, brown, deep green.
Magickal Focus:
Protection and grounding
Spells for prosperity and abundance
Releasing old habits or negativity
Divination for the months ahead
A simple ritual: Light a candle (half white, half black if you have it) to symbolize balance. Hold an apple, cut it crosswise to reveal the five-pointed star inside, and meditate on the wisdom of cycles, beginnings, growth, harvest, rest, and renewal.
A One-Card Mabon Pull
As we honor the balance of Mabon and give thanks for the harvest, it’s also a beautiful time to seek guidance for the season ahead.
To mark today’s energy, we pulled a one-card reading from the Seasons of the Witch: Mabon Oracle deck. ✨

Card Drawn: Cacao
Message (from the deck's book): Your higher self chose this card because cacao is such a comforting drink to experience. It's like a hug from your nearest and dearest, and when this card appears its a message from spirit acknowledging any motional hurt and pain you have felt. Whether you have experienced a break-up, the loss of a loved one, disappointment or a betrayal, cacao reminds you that it is safe to open your heart again.
However, do not feel rushed to welcome love from another before you have found love for yourself. What does it mean to you to feel loved, supported and emotionally nourished? How would your life look and feel if you loved and accepted yourself unconditionally? Feel your heart with the feelings these visualization invoke and allow them to gently soften you little by little.
This card is also a reminder that you are worthy of being loved. You are not broken, no matter what past experiences might have led you to believe. You are good, kind-hearted, gentle soul whose light is needed in the world. Please don't allow anyone's poor treatment to prevent you from letting others experience your light.
This simple pull is a reminder that the equinox invites us to reflect, release, and carry forward what will nourish us through the darker months ahead.
🍂 Turning the Wheel
Mabon is both a celebration and a farewell, a moment to revel in the bounty of the Earth while acknowledging the darkness to come. By honoring the balance of light and shadow, giving thanks, and preparing ourselves spiritually, we step into the next season with clarity and strength.
As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, may your harvest be abundant, your heart grateful, and your spirit balanced.
🍁 Blessed Mabon! 🌙
